All the PRIORI products are really amazing, but right now my favorite would have to be Coffeeberry Brightening Facial Complex! It’s great for my skin right now because I’m getting darker spots from being pregnant. I’ve been using it for a week now and I notice an amazing difference in the skin tone. I apply it both morning and night under my moisturizer, and then finish with a layer of sunscreen. The lightweight formula evens out skin tone, correcting hyperpigmentation from acne and sun damage. It’s non-irritating and is 98.5% natural with the Coffeeberry extract in it. Coffeeberry is nature’s most potent antioxidant which fights free radicals which causes aging.

Basically, it’s a fabulous product that evens and corrects the skin tone while being both natural and anti-aging!

My favorite PRIORI product right now is the Coffeeberry Perfecting Minerals. I love this product for several reasons. This makeup is not only going to give you great coverage, but it is also providing skin care to your skin. It is a 100% natural mineral make up with the powerful antioxidant, Coffeeberry. The Coffeeberry extract reduces inflammation in the skin, brightens the skin, and allows your skin to breath. It will also start the healing process for Acne clients. Not only is it fighting against free radicals it is also protecting your skin with an SPF 25. It’s even recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation! The minerals make up combats the signs of aging while the fine powder covers imperfections and discoloration. I also love the fact that they are an eco-friendly line. Everything down from the way they pick the fruit, to the packaging of the product. It is packaged in an eco-friendly plastic made from biodegradable plant rather than from oil. Application is easy and will not feel heavy on the skin. Last, this product is great for pregnant or nursing moms. Being 100% natural you can have protection on the skin and enjoy a high quality skin care.

Skin Care + Protection + Eco-friendly = An Amazing Makeup!

Skincare is an important part of a beauty regime and in taking care of ourselves. Finding the right products for our skin that work for us can seem taunting at times. Take a deep breath, drink a glass of water, and read the answers from Erin and Larissa about skincare!

What are the different skin types?

Erin and Larissa: Dry, Oily, Sensitive, Normal, Combination, and Acne.

How do I tell what skin type I am?

Erin: One good way is to see if you accumulate oil in the T zone area throughout the day, if so, then you are probably combination skin. If you have a tenancy to be oily all day long, then you are probably oily. If you have dryness all day long, then you are most likely dry. Another factor could be your ethnic background.

Larissa: Dry skin normally feels tight especially after cleansing. You may also have small, fine lines with dry patches. Oily skin has larger pores and usually is shiny. The skin will have the tendency to have more congestion. Sensitive skin is much thinner. It may also have visible capillaries with the tendency to blush easily. Normal skin is well balanced with medium size pores. The skin will have a smoother texture and feel plump. Combination skin will have oiliness in the T-zone area and dry to normal on the cheek area. Acne skin will have more congestion and blemishes. Severe acne will have sensitivity to the skin with inflammation and pustules.

How to treat my face, hands, legs, and overall body different or the same from one another?

Erin: Some people are blessed with great skin… if that is your case, I recommend doing an allover body moisturizer two times per day. If your skin is a little more acne prone, then you defiantly would want to use different types of product for the body versus the face. An experienced esthetician can look at your skin and advise you in the correct direction.

Larissa: I agree with Erin on top of moistures your body two times per day. Also use a loaf or body scrub two times per week to exfoliate. Your body skin will not only be softer, but it will also help prevent dryness. I also recommend investing in a pumice stone of some type and on a daily basis do a quick exfoliation on the balls and heels of your feet. After, lotion them up! This will prevent dry, cracked skin. Your facial area is delicate and more exposed to the elements. You always want to protect your face by using an SPF as well as a wide brim hat when out and about.

Skincare tips for Men

Erin: Make sure to wear a moisturizer. Men typically don’t like to feel greasy so they never wear moisturizer, but that actually can create more oil in the skin. Exfoliate twice a week and never be afraid to get a facial once in a while.

Larissa: With men less is best. They are less likely to treat their skin on a daily bases. So a simple skin care regimen is best for them. They have much thicker skin than women and are able to take a strong scrub. With shaving everyday be sure to use an after shave that is alcohol free. Always moisturize with SPF before you leave for the day.

What lifestyle changes can improve my skin?

Erin: The skin is the largest organ of the body so what we put into it shows up on the outside. Make sure to drink plenty of water, eat properly and get plenty of rest.

Larissa: Hydration! Drinking water is the best way to cleanse your body and it keep your skin quenched. Eat healthy including fruits and veggies that are high in antioxidants help fight free radical damage. Free radicals cause aging of the skin and pigmentation. Try to take time for yourself and relax. Walking outside, garden, yoga or whatever it is that you enjoy doing for relaxation. Keep it up!! Last use your yoga breaths! Take some time throughout your day to just breathe deeply and slowly. This will also help relax you!!

Biggest Skincare Mistakes

Erin: Purchasing very expensive products, purchasing a nonprofessional product in which the ingredients of the product are about 70% less active, purchasing something a product that worked for your friend… it may not always work for yourself.

Larissa: Not taking vitamins daily, not drinking water daily, and not relaxing. Like Erin said the skin is the largest organ in the body. When you take care of it from within, it will reflect on your skin!

How to prevent wrinkles and age spots?

Erin: It is never too early to start purchasing anti-wrinkle creams and sun spot products. ALWAYS wear sunscreen, even though you wear sunscreen it does not mean you’re not going to get sun on your skin.

Larissa: Having a facial maintenance program will be a big help. Every 4 to 6 weeks come in for regular facials. Be sure to use a quality home care skin care system with pure active ingredients that work quickly. Serums which are specific for wrinkles or sun spots are a must. Wash your face morning and night so that you can help the removal of the pollutants and carcinogens. Try to stay out of the sun and always use a sun block! Be sure to reapply your sun block if you’re out being active for more than an hour.

Why do seasonal changes affect my skin?

Erin: When you change the moisture or dryness in the air, it affects the skin even during allergy season.

Larissa: In the summer when it is more humid your skin will feel oilier. In the winter when it is dryer your skin will fill tighter. I always recommend that when the season changes come in for a facial like our Signature Epicurean Facial or a Coffeeberry Peel. This is a great way to prep your skin for the new season and get rid of the stress on the skin from the last season.

Why does stress affect my skin?

Erin: The skin being the largest organ in the body, whatever happens internally shows on the outside. It’s the body’s way of saying something’s wrong.

Larissa: It is true that stress can affect your skin. There are studies done on this and not only can it affect your skin, but you hair and nails as well.

How often should I exfoliate and use a mask?

Erin: I usually recommend exfoliating two times per week and in the evening, we run around all day long building up oil and dirt throughout the day. Typically you could mask once a week or once a month, but it would depend on your skin type.

Larissa: Exfoliate no more than two times per week. If you over do it, you’re not giving your skin the opportunity to replenish with newer skin. If you’re oily, I would use a mud mask once a week. With drier skin, use a hydrating mask once a week. I like to call it a mini facial at home!

What does facial toner do? Do I need to use it?

Erin and Larissa: Toner is important to restore and balance the skin’s PH level while hydrating and refreshing the skin. Yes, you need a toner.

Dark circles… How do I get rid of them?

Erin: There are dark circle creams that can be purchased, getting plenty of sleep, water and a balanced diet. It also can sometimes be hereditary.

Larissa: Some dark circles can be hereditary. The best way to prevent this is getting plenty of rest. Always use on eye cream that targets dark circles. If you can cucumber slices at the end of your day for a few brief moments, it is a nice way to treat your eyes!

Moisturizing tips

Erin: Find the proper moisturizer for your skin type!

Larissa: If you want your moist to work the best, apply it while your skin is still damp from your toner. Your skin will absorb the products and seal the moist in while your pores close and your skin dries. Your natural moisture protection works better. If you apply to completely dry skin your moist will sit at the top and not absorb. When this happens, your skin will over produce oily to compensate for the loss of moisture.

Drugstore skincare products versus more expensive skincare products

Erin: What you want to look for in skin care products are the ingredients in them. You want to purchase products where you can ask a professional questions about the product, what is in it, and how it works. Here at Urban Skin Care, we are trained professionals who have monthly continuing education classes to keep us informed with the latest in skincare.

Larissa: You are going to get more of a cosmetic skin care from over the counter verses a medical grade from a skin care spa. Ingredients are key!

Any Green beauty tips or Green skincare advice

Erin: If you get a blemish, don’t touch it and put hydrogen peroxide on it. Let it disinfect on its own.

Larissa: Change your pillow cases once a week, wash your makeup brushes/sponges once a week, and we have our Priori Coffeeberry line that is all natural!!

Reader Questions Submitted on Facebook and Twitter:

- Jill Ann D. “What can be done about adult acne!! I hate it!!”

Erin: Don’t touch your skin and see a professional to get the proper advice. I would recommend seeing an experienced esthetician before you see a dermatologist. Sometimes a change in your daily routine can change your skin all together.

Larissa: I know!! This can be so frustrating. I recommend a clear completion facial every two weeks and a good take home skin care.

- Allison A “As I get older my nose pores seem to be getting larger. And there is ‘stuff’ in them… not whiteheads or blackheads… just stuff. How can I make my nose pores smaller and clean?”

Erin and Larissa: Monthly facials, which would involve extractions, would help minimize the dirt we get in our pores that make our pores appear larger. As well as exfoliating properly.

- Elliot “There are hairs growing from my pores. What is this and how can I get rid of them?”

Erin and Larissa: We have tiny hairs that cover our entire body! During the facial, the esthetician would prep the skin properly to extract them without any discomfort.

We hope you found this informative and helpful! As always, if you have a question or comment, leave us a comment or email us at urban@urbanskincare.com! We would love to hear from you and we look forward to sharing more skincare knowledge with you!

To show you a little more about us and who we are, we’re doing mini Q&A’s with each of us. We mixed personal questions with beauty questions. Larissa is next! Enjoy!

Where did you grow up?

I was born and raised here in San Diego!!

What was your favorite part of beauty school?

I loved beauty school for several reasons. I really liked learning more about the skin and how to treat skin conditions. It was really exciting to learn about products and ingredients; how they help improve the skin. The best part about school was learning hands on facial techniques and speed waxing. Incorporating all the yummy products with hands on pampering felt so good and till this day I enjoy so much.

What made you decide to go to beauty school and become an esthetician?

Growing up every weekend I would have a ritual with my Grandmother Connie. We would sit in the living room by a window and I would tweeze and shape her eyebrows at a young age. It would take me hours, but loved it!! That time that we spent was priceless! She would also let me do extractions on her and clean her pores out, which I thought was so much fun.

As I got older shaving my legs and bikini area became irritating for me. I had to learn how to wax myself. I started with waxing my legs then underarms, brows, and before I knew it I was waxing every part of my body that I could. Then, my friends started to come to me for waxing and started to send their friends and so on. After being married a year, my husband said you can make some money doing this!! He pushed me to go to school and that’s when it all moved forward, quickly!

What advice do you have for anyone wanting to become an esthetician?

My best advice is always remember that you are in this for the love of skin and being passionate about caring for people. You are helping to maximize the best results in what they are looking for. Always be ready to work. You will put a lot of your whole being into it, so be sure to recharge yourself!

What’s beauty to you?

Beauty to me is always being good to yourself and true to who you are.

Any general skincare and beauty tips.

Stay healthy, hydrated, and get rest! Always invest in a good product line that includes an exfoliate. Take your time while cleansing your skin and do a little mini massage on your skin when applying your serum and moisturizer. Your skin will love being massaged!

Try not to pick on your skin, but if you need to, wrap your fingertips in a Kleenex or soft cotton. This will help protect your skin.

What’s your favorite part of your job?

I always look forward to seeing who I’m working on that day. I love the verity of services that I provide and enjoy making people feel refreshed and recharged. It is a very fulfilling job and I am so grateful that I do what I do.

What does Urban Skin Care mean to you?

Urban to me is a place where you can have a high quality skin care service with very effective products. We provide a warm soothing environment where you feel like a part of our family the minute you walk in.

What’s the brand philosophy?

Urban Skin care is exceptional quality with unmatched service.

What other hobbies or interests do you have?

I enjoy spending time with my family, living in San Diego. There is always something fun to do. I also enjoy gardening, cooking, going on walks, and spending time with my friends.

Erin: What three words would you use to describe Larissa?

Larissa is/has: A great work ethic, she is very patient, and she’s a wonderful mom, wife, and business partner.

If you have a question for Larissa, leave her a comment below! We look forward to responding to all your unanswered beauty and skin care questions!

Eyebrows are the topic for this week’s Q&A and we love them! Eyebrows are an amazing transformer. They help frame your face… by keeping them shaped and groomed it will make a huge difference in your overall appearance! This is a grooming process and it is one of the first parts of you that people see when you meet. Always try to keep them looking clean, neat and brushed. You can enhance them with make-up to also give you a fuller look and a precise shape.

How do you know what eyebrow shape is best for you or your face shape?

When looking at a person you can see the natural shape and look to their brow by overall shape of face and positioning of his/her eyes. We always like to recommend keeping the brow as natural as possible with a nice thick shape to it. However, some people like to have a thinner brow or even an allover reshape. This is where you look at the shape of the eye and have to determine where the arch will be by the height of brow bone. We also find that going in a few hair lines and shorting the thick part of brow makes a huge deference. And simply cutting down the brow slightly can also help change shape and thin out without waxing too much off.

How do you find the perfect eyebrow shape?

Keep in mind that most brows are not exactly the same… Just like you may have one foot bigger than the other. Some people may have one brow grow differently than the other or one brow muscle that is more dominate than the other. The best thing to do is let your eyebrows grow out completely to see what you have to work with and depending on your face shape and preference then shape the brow. There are so many ways to shape the brow. Look in magazines too! You can bring in a picture to give your esthetician an idea of what shape you’re looking for and then they can best match it.

What are the different ways to shaping eyebrows?

There are many different ways to shape. You can have a thicker brow with a deep arch. A thin brow with deep arch. Natural thick brow with just a clean and trim up. Moon shape brow. This will definitely depend on the shape of face and on the natural growth of the eyebrow. The three main methods for shaping eyebrows are Tweezing, Treading, and Waxing.

What about Tweezing? Pros, cons, and thoughts?

Tweezing is the best way to keep your brows neat and clean in between waxing appointments. Tweezing can be hard to shape your brows with if you’re not experience. You can over pluck, possibly pulling more from one eyebrow than the other. … We call it “Tweezer Happy”! This will completely change the look of your brow. Remember one little hair can make a huge difference! Make sure you invest in a good quality tweezers with a nice slant. We like the brand Tweezerman! The tip of the slant should sit flush against itself. If not, it won’t grab and that can get frustrating. Also, tweezing is great for Accutane users or people with thin skin. The downside to tweezing is you may NOT get all the finer hairs removed. We personally have no problem tweezing for that perfect client!

What about Threading? Pros, cons, and thoughts?

Threading is as old as waxing. This process is perfect for someone who has problems with breaking out from waxing. I would only recommend this for smaller areas such as facial hair removal, brows, or lip. It can be quite painful and is very similar to tweezing, but with larger amounts of hair being removed. If the hair is not pulled from the root, it can break and grow back quicker than waxing. It can also grow back thicker, if not pulled properly for the root. It’s a preference to you and if you can tolerate the additional pain.

What about Waxing? Pros, cons, and thoughts?

Waxing is great for shaping and cleaning all the hair from the brow area. It removes quickly and completely! It’s best not to wax on those clients who are using a Retin-a, Accutane or any other acne medication. We think it’s the best way for hair removal for most people. It’s thorough and efficient.

What to do between eyebrow waxing?

It is perfectly fine to clean hair away from brow area by tweezing in between your waxing appointment, but don’t go into your shape. Leave that to your waxer. Focus on tweezing the obvious, stray hairs. And make sure to schedule your eyebrow appointment at least every 2 weeks.

Should I dye my eyebrows?

Oh yea!! Absolutely, especially if your hair is much lighter, it really stands out. It looks so amazing when you have your brows tinted before a wax. You can really see your shape and thickness with this treatment. Sometimes at first it can look a little bold, but the next day it will look perfect!

What to do before eyebrow waxing?

Don’t touch (tweeze) your eyebrows and let the esthetician see how your natural brows grow in so she can recommend what shape would be best for you. Make sure you let your waxer know if you’re on any medication and drink lots of water. Also let her know if your skin is sensitive, so they can use the proper pre-wax prep to prevent any lifting of the skin.

What to expect during eyebrow waxing?

There should be a consultation on what you would like and what your esthetician can do with your brows. Expect the esthetician to ask what kind of shape you want. Once the recommendation is agreed upon, your brows will be brushed to place them. A pre-wax should be used. Then warm wax will be applied and then removed quickly. The middle brow, top of the brows and brow bone area should be waxed. Then after you’ve be wax the shaping should be completed by tweezing. Last, the area may be cleaned and a post wax solution can be applied.

What to do after eyebrow waxing?

Try not to touch the skin too much because the dirt from your hands can cause breakouts. You can apply a mineral make-up like our PRIORI Coffeeberry Minerals which will not clog your pores and has an anti-inflammatory built into it. I love that! Depending on the person either hydrogen peroxide or a soothing cream can be applied after waxing.

Any general issues people have with waxing? And how do I fix them?

Some of you may experience your skin lifting after a wax. Often you may feel like you have a burn. This can happen and you may apply Neosporin to the area for quick healing. Some people’s skin is not intended to be waxed, if so, you can tweeze or thread.

Any general advice on eyebrows?

Never over tweeze! If you see someone who has amazing eyebrows, ask where they got them done… it’s nice to get a referral for this type of service. Be patient while letting them grow in. It could take a few months for them to grow in.

To follow up with our Basics of Waxing blog post, we wanted to share with you more on a product we love called PFB Vanish. We mentioned this amazing product in our blog to answer the question of how to help inflammation and ingrown hairs. PFB Vanish is a moisturizing serum used after waxing and other hair removal methods to calm the irritations created by these methods.

A roll-on gel that banishes ingrown hairs.

A treatment gel for barbae folliculitis

Exfoliates skin’s surface to allow hairs uninhibited growth

Prevents infection with antibacterial action

Contains glycolic, salicylic and lactic acids

Hydrates for a comforting finish

PFB Vanish is a gel formulation that comes as a roll-on applicator so there is no product wasted. And it has a great herbal scent. We love it because it works and it doesn’t irritate the skin or leave a chalky white residue. Most people see results in 48 hours.

Both men and women can use PFB Vanish on their face, nape of neck, underarms, bikini area, legs, chest and back. For maximum benefits, apply daily after waxing, shaving, tweezing electrolysis and laser removal.

Tips for using this product:

Use after showering. This allows the pores to open from the steam and water which will aid the product to better penetrate the skin.

If you feel like your skin is getting too dry, you should stop using it for a day or so and then continue on again.

Alternating with some kind of lotion will help keep the skin balanced.

To begin our Q & A section of our blog, we wanted to start with the basics of waxing… answering the questions from before, during, and after your waxing experience. We hope the mysteries behind waxing become clarified and you learn something new. If you find yourself with a different question than we have answered here, please feel free to post a comment with your question!

What do I do before waxing?

Before waxing drink plenty of water and take an Ibuprofen to help ease any inflammation and pain. The hair should have at least two weeks of hair growth (1/8th of an inch). You don’t need to cut or trim your hair as your esthetician can do this for you. It is best to clean the area before waxing with wet wipes or wet cloth. If you have thick coarse hair, you can gently exfoliate before your wax using a loofah mitt to help release hair from skin. Exfoliate using a backward circle motion against the hair growth.

Also, always be sure to communicate with your skin care therapist on any medication you’re on or areas which are more sensitive than others. Example, the inner thigh bone area is a delicate part for most women to have waxed. If you have any concerns or questions, don’t be afraid to ask your skin care therapist! They have heard it all before and will be better able to wax you!

What should I expect during waxing?

You should be in a clean private room and will be ask to remove all clothing below the waist including underwear. If you need privacy to cleanse ask for it! Don’t be afraid to ask! If you’re with a professional they should be very understanding and sensitive to this, as it may be an uncomfortable moment for you!

The esthetician will ask how you prefer your hair. If you decided to leave hair and how you would like it.

Be sure your skin care therapist is wearing gloves and has plenty of wax sticks and strips ready for use. The wax will feel warm and depending on your level of sensitivity may even feel hot for a brief second. Especially if you have some form of a number on. However, it should never feel like it is burning.

The wax will be applied and you should help by holding your skin taunt. The tighter you hold your skin the less pull you will feel. Your waxer will apply a strip of muslin and should pull very fast to get a perfect removal of hair. This should be a fast process and take no longer than 10 to 15 minutes for a complete Brazilian wax front and back!

After your front is wax your backside is next. This is where estheticians may do it differently. We have you flip over face down and have you help by holding your cheeks open and very quickly before you know it the wax is on and off. I have heard of women going on all fours, legs over their heads, or if they are pregnant on their side.

If it is your first time waxing, you will feel it and it will be sore. But if your waxer is fast, before you know it is over! Also keep in mind, after the first time it won’t be as bad. With our clients we have amazing results with 50% less hair and thickness after just the first wax. So the next wax is less painful!

Also, don’t shave or it will be like starting all over!

What do I do after waxing?

You may feel a little sticky! Your skin may be sore and feel like a sunburn. This is all very normal.

The skin is fresh skin and should be taking care of. Be sure to keep area clean and not to work out. You may want to take a shower or put on an oil base. We use a gentle solution of grapeseed oil with Himalayas extract which helps sooth and nourish the skin while killing any bacteria on skin surface. This oil solution will also help with the stickiness.

What are the benefits of waxing?

The hair becomes finer taking up to 4 weeks to grow back. It will also become more sporadic and eventually parts will not ever return. Waxing also helps with ingrown hairs and razor burn. Waxing is much cleaner compared to shaving and leaves no stubble.

Also, your skin will feel super soft and smooth… even when your hair is growing back. Waxing won’t itch or irritate your skin as the hair is growing in. Plus, you feel much cleaner and fresher. Especially with the backside!

What are the alternatives of waxing?

Alternatives to waxing include shaving, hair removal creams like Nair (for some body parts), and laser treatments.

Am I going to bleed?

Depending on the person you may bleed. If you’re a diabetic, chances are you will. If you have thick coarse hair, pulling hair from the root can cause slight bleeding. Your follicles can also react, but this is normal and with a few more waxes your skin will get trained. This is common with men and getting their back waxed. Once the skin is used to it (usually second or third wax) you will no longer have that issue.

Is waxing painful?

Waxing can be painful and sore for some, but keeping hydrated is important and will help with the pain. The more hydrated you are the less your hair holds on.

What should I expect after waxing?

You should book your next appointment for 4 weeks out to maintain the wax and really see the benefits. You may be a little tender and may not want to do any heavy exercising.

How do I keep the inflammation down?

Alternating exfoliating and hydrating the area will help with inflammation along with Ibuprofen prior to waxing. After waxing you may use cortisone cream, if the area seems to have a hive look to your skin. This can happen with coarse thick hair. Visualize a plucked chicken’s skin…

Also, we carry a product our online store called PFB Vanish that also helps with inflammation and ingrown hairs.

How do I deal with ingrown hairs?

If you are prone to ingrown hairs, you are more likely to have a few. But you will have less and not as inflamed ones with waxing. It is very important to exfoliate before waxing and after waxing with a loofah mitt, gentle body scrub, or even a wash cloth in an upward circle motion. Keeping hydrated before and after waxing is also important.

You can also purchase PFB Vanish which we love and it works really well. If that doesn’t work, we find with our most extreme cases a 5% or 10% glycolic acid will do the trick. Your skin care therapist should also be able to extract your ingrown hairs for you, if needed with a safe and clean way to remove hair.
